We believe that neurodiversity affirming practice in psychology and Positive Behaviour Support is about embracing diversity, empowering rights and agency, promoting positive identity and wellbeing.
We do not pathologise or seek to normalise or eliminate differences. We celebrate the inherent value of human diversity.
We seek to centre the experiences, rights and values of neurodivergents.
We embrace the paradigm shift.
We are trauma-informed, recognising that to be disabled, is to be part of a marginalised group. We seek to foster psychological safety by creating and advocating for safe and accommodating spaces and environments. We seek to normalise, understand and accommodate sensory and communication differences including self-regulatory behaviour and diverse communication styles.
We acknowledge that privilege and power differentials impact neurodivergents and other marginalised groups. We actively work to dismantle our own privilege and biases in practice.
We believe that neurodivergents have the right to safe, ethical and evidence-informed practice.
We know that neurodivergents have thoughts and feelings and we employ a full, collaborative and holistic person-centred biopsychosocial and environmental (systemic) assessment.
We are committed to continuously learning and improving our neurodiversity affirming practice.
Positive Shift acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and the Traditional Owners of the land on which our office resides, the Turrbal people. We recognise their continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures; and to Elders past and present.
