Psychological Assessments

Cognitive Assessment

What is a cognitive assessment?

A cognitive assessment is used to measure a person’s cognitive abilities, including memory, attention, problem-solving skills, and language proficiency. This assessment provides an overview of the person’s strengths and weaknesses in cognitive functioning, and how they impact learning and processing of information. It can also be used to diagnose an intellectual disability, as well as provide evidence for additional support.

When should we consider a cognitive assessment?

It is worth considering a cognitive assessment if you notice difficulties in intellectual functioning such as:

  • Difficulties focusing on tasks and concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Challenges in planning or following instructions
  • Slower working pace compared to others
  • Difficulties finding words or following conversations

Educational Assessment

What is an educational assessment?

An educational assessment, which includes both a Cognitive and Achievement Assessment, is used to measure and compare a person’s intellectual abilities and academic performance. These assessments outline the strengths and weaknesses in cognitive ability and academic performance and can be used to diagnose an intellectual disability or specific learning disorder.

When should we consider an educational assessment?

It is worth considering an educational assessment if you notice difficulties in specific areas of learning such as spelling, writing, reading, and mathematics. This can include:

  • Difficulties connecting letters to sounds
  • Mixing up letters or sentence jumbling
  • Inconsistent spelling (spelling the same word differently in one piece of writing)
  • Struggles in understanding numbers, time, or symbols
  • Difficulties in handwriting
